EU to sharpen ban on greenwashing
The European Parliament and Council have reached a provisional agreement on rules concerning misleading advertisements and improved provision of information.
While the focus lays on consumer goods, it contains several phrasings that could cover funds’ marketing communications:
- Generic environmental claims such as ‘natural’, ‘biodegradable’, ‘climate neutral’, or ‘eco’ unless there is a recognised proof of excellence
- Claims based on emissions offsetting schemes that the product has a neutral, reduced or positive environmental impact
- Sustainability labels not based on approved certification schemes or established public authorities.
The text will still require a final vote from both Parliament and the Council.
