TECHWORK 23: Matt Guy, Hermes GPE

Experience
Guy has 10 years’ experience in private equity and is focused on business transformation for Federated Hermes Private Markets, with his work centred on the Hermes Global Private Equity business.

Responsibilities include implementation of operating models for new fund products and jurisdictions, fund structuring, fund finance solutions, and driving operational efficiency and effectiveness through the use of cutting-edge technology such as AI and machine learning. Guy is leading the private markets data platform project to democratise and disseminate information via dashboards to clients and management.

Prior to this, Guy worked in private equity audit at KPMG, specialising in IPEV valuations and modelling. In between these roles, he worked for the UK Government’s Cabinet Office as a commercial adviser, advising senior civil servants and stewarding the government's joint-venture investments. He is a chartered accountant and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in accountancy.

Achievements
Working closely with the C-suite, Guy prioritised and executed a variety of financial and operational projects. To achieve this, he established a customised governance structure responsible for solving the unique needs of stakeholders from across the business.

Projects included the implementation of AI and machine learning to collate and extract information from investment documents, designing a digital target operating model, and leading the upgrade to SaaS for the business’s primary system for all client, fund and investment data.

Guy is currently overseeing two transformational projects – the implementation of a private markets data platform (supporting c.$20bn AUM), and the implementation of a calculation engine to automate carried interest and management fee calculations. Both projects aim to deliver significant benefits centred around automation, data democratisation and enhancements to the control environment.

In future, Guy’s focus will be on developing the business’s digital capability and leveraging the latest digital solutions to create a coherent ecosystem that disrupts inefficient processes and solves for the problems that have the most impact. Guy is aspiring to contribute to the evolution of data science in the private equity industry, with it becoming seamlessly integrated in day-to-day operations, decision making and the value creation process.
