Silicon Roundabout Ventures appoints CTO
Silicon Roundabout Ventures has appointed Ralph King as the firm’s CTO, as it aims to establish itself as a tech-driven VC firm.
King joins from Anthemis Group where he spent the last two years working as tech lead. Prior to that, he worked for four years at REalyse, most recently as a technical adviser. Additionally, he acts as fractional CTO and adviser to several early-stage startups, and is an angel investor in various startups.
The appointment marks the first C-suite executive in the firm’s operational function. In conversation with The Drawdown, founder Francesco Perticarari explained this strategic choice: “With a background in software engineering myself, the vision for the firm was always to build a VC which is driven by the tech it deploys. To this end, we want people with a background in science and engineering to help realise this vision.”
King himself added: “VC firms that want to be data driven need to look at the whole value chain. The focus on data-driven sourcing and filtering happening in the market right now is a great start, but there is not enough high-quality data yet to make it valuable for early stage – and that means missing opportunities to leverage technology in other areas. Emphasising the tech- and product-driven approach across everything we do frees us up to cultivate the two external pillars which will make up Silicon Roundabout’s success: its investors and the founders we back – the human side of the equation.”
Launched in 2022, Silicon Roundabout is based in the UK. Its fund pools capital from angel investors and other funds to co-invest in deep tech and big data startups at pre-seed and seed stage.
