TDA 2022 Advisory/Consultancy: Tax winner: Macfarlanes

by Alice Murray 10 August 2022

The judges were unanimous in their admiration of Macfarlane’s tax offering. Particular praise was given to the group’s PE tax forum, which was highlighted for providing an extremely useful bank of resources as well as highly detailed sessions. One judge labelled Macfarlane’s tax advice as, “Advice you want to keep to yourself.”

“We pride ourselves on cross-departmental collaboration and as a result are well-known for our market-leading presence in the private equity industry, giving us experience, knowhow and insight which is unparalleled,” comments the team.

Macfarlanes is an active thought leader in the development of private equity tax rules. An example of this was the team’s work on the tax treatment of asset holding companies. Macfarlanes was involved in extensive discussions with HMT to develop policy in this area since 2018 and has been closely engaged in the consultations, which have led to the current form of the regime, which came into force on 1 April 2022.

“As well as providing our clients with technical advice delivered in a responsive, proportionate and commercial way, we make available a wide range of additional tax related services to clients. We established the Private Equity Tax Forum in 2017 to harness the collective tax knowledge and insight that exists  amongst tax focused individuals in the private equity industry. We host a series of technical training sessions and have a dedicated PETF extranet site, providing access to associated materials, training resources and client briefings,” adds the team.
