MJ Hudson has made its first acquisition in the ESG sphere through its purchase of Amsterdam-based Spring Associates Responsible Investment Service.
MJ Hudson has been advising on ESG matters for a number of years, and during the last two years published the MJ Hudson Book of Environment, Social and Governance Factors in Private Equity Investing. For those who haven’t read it, the guide can be downloaded here.
While the acquisition of the consultancy furthers MJ Hudson’s reach in the ESG sphere, the asset management consultancy has been expanding geographically over the past year. In January it established a legal practice in Milan, and in December is acquired Amaces – a data and analytics specialists working across Europe and the US.
Founded in 2005, Spring Associates has grown its private equity and institutional investor client base, advising on ESG matters.
As part of the deal, the clients and 10 professionals along with support staff will move to the newly formed entity – MJ Hudson Spring.
MJ Hudson Spring will support managers integrating ESG into investment processes and offer support to portfolio companies by identifying and monitoring ESG risks and opportunities.
In a statement, Matthew Hudson, CEO of MJ Hudson said: “We believe the next phase [of ESG] calls for more independent and consistent analysis of ESG factors within a framework that can assess the depth to which it has been internalised. The era of so-called ‘greenwashing’ is at an end, and the Spring team saw it coming.”
